Cooling that gets looked after, not just installed

Basalt Field is a servicing-only workshop. We clean, measure and repair air conditioning that already exists — and we tell you plainly what the system needs next, in writing, before anything is replaced.

Systems covered

Wall splits, multi-splits, ducted zones, ceiling cassettes and window units.

Visit windows

Morning, midday and late-afternoon slots, confirmed by email the day before.

After every visit

A written condition report: measurements taken, work done, what to watch.

Tell us what you're noticing

Most calls start with a sound, a smell or a room that will not settle. Find the closest description below — it usually points to the type of visit you need, and it saves a round of guesswork when you write to us.

01

Blowing, but the room stays warm

Airflow is present and the compressor is running, so the fault is usually restricted airflow across a loaded coil, a filter left in too long, or refrigerant pressure sitting outside its range. Measuring both sides tells us which.

Diagnosis visit
02

A sour or musty smell on startup

Damp biofilm on the evaporator and in the drain tray. It is a cleaning job, not a parts job — the indoor unit is stripped, the coil and blower wheel are washed, and the drain line is flushed and rechecked.

Deep clean
03

Water marking the wall below the unit

Condensate is not reaching the drain. Common causes are a blocked or back-falling drain line, a cracked tray, or an indoor unit that has shifted slightly out of level since installation.

Diagnosis visit
04

Rattles, clicks or a cycle that never stops

Fan-bearing wear, loose mounts and debris in the outdoor unit make noise; short-cycling or constant running is usually a control, sensor or sizing question. Both are checked with the covers off and the system live.

Four service lanes

What we actually carry out

Every lane is fixed in scope, so you know before booking what is included and roughly how long we will be on site. Nothing outside the scope happens without your say-so.

Lane 01

Scheduled maintenance

  • Filters washed or replaced, seals and mounts checked
  • Indoor and outdoor coils cleared of dust and debris
  • Drain line flushed, tray cleaned and fall checked
  • Supply and return temperatures measured and logged
  • Electrical connections and contactors inspected

Typical visit 45–75 minutes per unit

Lane 02

Deep clean & sanitise

  • Indoor unit stripped: cover, louvre and drip tray removed
  • Evaporator and blower wheel pressure-washed under cover
  • Drain line cleared end to end and flow-tested
  • Outdoor coil fin-combed and rinsed where accessible
  • Treatment applied to tray and housing, then reassembled

Typical visit 1.5–2.5 hours per unit

Lane 03

Fault diagnosis

  • Symptom reproduced with the system running
  • Pressures, superheat and subcool read and recorded
  • Control board, sensors and error history interrogated
  • Leak search on suspect joints and line-set runs
  • Findings written up with options before any repair

Typical visit 60–90 minutes

Lane 04

Install review

  • Unit sizing checked against the room it serves
  • Line-set insulation, lagging and bracket condition
  • Outdoor unit clearance, level and airflow path
  • Drain fall, termination point and trap arrangement
  • Plain-language report for owners, landlords or buyers

Typical visit 45 minutes, no parts fitted

On the day

What a visit looks like

The same four steps run on every job, whether it is a routine service or a fault you have been chasing for weeks.

Step 01

Arrival & walkthrough

We confirm which units are in scope, lay down floor protection, and ask what you have noticed and when it started.

Step 02

Measure before touching

Baseline readings are taken while the system runs as you normally use it, so we can compare the same figures afterwards.

Step 03

The work itself

Cleaning and adjustments in scope go ahead. Anything extra is explained first, with the reason and the alternative to doing it.

Step 04

Report & handover

We run the system with you, leave the space as we found it, and email a condition report with readings and next service timing.

Between services

Three habits that do most of the work

None of these need a technician. They are simply the things we see neglected most often when a system arrives in poor condition.

  • Wash filters on a rhythm, not a reminder

Pick a fixed day each month during heavy use. Rinse from the clean side outwards, let them dry fully, and never refit a damp filter — that is where the smell starts.

  • Keep a metre clear around the outdoor unit

Bins, planters and stacked furniture make the unit breathe its own hot air. Clear space costs nothing and shows up immediately in running time.

  • Stop chasing the thermostat

Setting a low target does not cool a room faster; it just runs the compressor longer. Choose a comfortable set point, leave it, and let the system cycle.

Coverage & scheduling

Where we work and how slots run

We service homes, small offices, studios and shopfronts. Larger multi-unit sites are booked as a half-day block rather than a single slot.

Service zones

Bookings are grouped by zone so travel stays short and slot windows stay accurate.

  • Northline
  • Harbour West
  • Old Quarry
  • Ridgeway
  • Eastfield
  • The Terraces

Slot types

Single-unit services take one slot. Deep cleans and multi-unit homes take two consecutive slots, and we will say so when we confirm rather than after we arrive.

What we need on site

Clear access to the indoor units and the outdoor unit, a power point, and somewhere to rinse equipment. For apartments, tell us in advance if building management needs notice.

Questions

Asked on most first calls

How often should a unit actually be serviced?

Once a year is enough for a household unit used seasonally. Units running most of the year, units in kitchens or workshops, and anything with pets or heavy dust nearby are better on a six-month rhythm. We put the suggested next date in your report rather than selling a fixed plan.

Do you top up refrigerant as part of a service?

No. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so a low charge means a leak. We measure, look for the leak, and quote the repair. Topping up without finding the cause only buys a few weeks and vents gas in the meantime.

Will a clean fix a noisy unit?

Sometimes. Debris in the blower wheel or outdoor fan, and dust loading that unbalances the wheel, both make noise a clean will solve. Bearing whine, a buzzing contactor or a rattling compressor mount will not improve with cleaning, and we will tell you that on the day instead of cleaning anyway.

I rent — can I book, or does the owner have to?

You can book a service or a diagnosis visit yourself, but repairs on a landlord's equipment normally need their approval. We can address the report to you and to the owner or agent, so the findings can be passed on without a second visit.

Can you service a unit still under manufacturer warranty?

Yes, and routine servicing is usually a condition of keeping that warranty valid. We record what was done and the readings taken so you have evidence of maintenance. If the fault looks like a warranty claim, we say so and leave the part alone.

What would stop you completing a visit?

Unsafe roof or ladder access to an outdoor unit, live electrical faults outside our scope, or a unit that cannot be reached without dismantling cabinetry. We will explain what is needed, do whatever else is safely possible on the day, and reschedule the rest.
